Project Description

The project is to analyze the accuracy and precision of wireless ultrawideband localization systems to estimate the position of multiple persons moving in the workspace vitality hub.

 

What you will do

Four FITT founding partners (Fontys University of Applied Sciences, imec , TNO and the Eindhoven University of Technology) have been working together to get people to be more physically active at work, mentally healthier and more connected with their colleagues. Since September 2021, the collaboration takes place at a physical location: the Workplace Vitality Hub on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The Hub in building 85 offers space, for joint research & development into "vitality at work" solutions, supported by smart technologies. Sponsors provided smart sensors, that can be used to acquire data about the building, so that it becomes clear how users can be supported to do their work healthily and efficiently. Examples are sensors that monitor occupancy, temperature, and air quality.

 

In the recent years, we have seen emergence of Ultra WideBand (UWB) localization systems in smart phones, smart watches, and tags. The aim of the project is to get a better understanding of the accuracy and precision of UWB systems that estimate the position of multiple persons moving in the workspace vitality hub. The feature of UWB that makes it interesting for use in localization is its wide bandwidth, that allows better discrimination of multipaths and better estimates of flight time in indoor environments compared to other RF technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

 

Tasks:
  • Literature review ; get familiar with the ground truth motion capture system and the various UWB systems.

  • Evaluate the out-of-the box of the UWB sensors based on their deviation from the ground truth in 2D and 3D.

  • Work together with other researchers on signal processing methods to improve UWB localization accuracy.

  • Evaluate the expected UWB performance by applying the improvements in the testbed.

  • Reporting and presenting.

Who you are
  • MSc student in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.

  • Available for a period of 9 months.

  • Affinity with wireless and localization systems.

  • Knowledge of (wireless) signal processing.

  • Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python.

  • Entitled to do an internship in the Netherlands.

  • Motivated student eager to work independently and expand knowledge in the field.

  • Good written and verbal English skills.
